Amazon Reviews

I don't know about you, but I would guesstimate that 90% of my online shopping starts on Amazon. And, almost all of that shopping includes reading a product review. I mean, I want to know what others thought of it before I spend my money on something - don't you?

Which is why hundreds of Amazon retailers will send you discounted, or even free, products in exchange for your writing an unbiased and honest review of their product. So, you're making money by not spending as much - that is... if you choose items to review that you already needed.

I am NOT kidding. This is for real, y'all! I heard a group of my friends talking about doing it, and it piqued my interest so I started looking into it. There are some things to watch for but they are minor. So, since after asking my friends if they had heard of it and finding that most of them have not, I thought it would be helpful if I wrote up what I learned so that we can all do it together.

You'll find that there really aren't any perks for referring anyone or sharing the information. There is one site where referrals matter and I'll identify it below so you know, too.

First things first, for this to really work in your favor you need to have an Amazon Prime account. One of the perks of an Amazon Prime account is free two-day shipping (in most cases) and you're going to need that benefit to avoid paying shipping costs on the products you'll be reviewing. (If you don't already have one, use this link to try it out for 30 days for just $3. Seriously though.... if you don't have one you are probably WASTING a ton of money! (You can read my thoughts about the awesomeness of Amazon Prime here!).

Second, before you do anything else - pop over to your Amazon orders page and start writing reviews on the items you have already purchased. (To find that page, sign into your Amazon account, click on Your Account and then select Your Orders from the drop down menu.) Why you ask? Well, you want to start building your reviewer score and you want to get into the habit of reviewing every single purchase you make. EVERY. SINGLE. PURCHASE.  I'll go into what you need to include in a review in a bit. (After I started reviewing the products I had already purchased, sellers started contacting me with invitations to review their products. But, there are much easier ways for you to get started without waiting for a seller to contact you - so keep reading!)

Okay... so what should you include in a review? Before I get into that, there are some important rules to follow.
  • First off you need to be honest and ONLY review items you have personally used (you could also have watched someone, very closely, but ideally you should only be items you personally reviewed).
  • It is also important that you leave an honest and unbiased opinion. That being said, if you have an issue with an item you were selected to review, it is expected that you will contact the seller prior to leaving a review. If you experience any issues with the product, it is courteous to give them an opportunity to rectify the problem.
  • Your reviews should be at least 175 words long - from start to finish. They should be original (not copy & pasted from another review), entertaining (no one wants to be bored!), detailed, informative, well written and complement the product description already on Amazon. The more detailed and informative your review is, the more helpful it is to others. Be specific. Think about what you would like to see in a review when deciding on whether you should purchase a product. A descriptive review will help your Amazon review rating.

Things I include in most of my reviews are:
  • 3-5 things I liked about the item/product
  • 1-2 things I did not like care for or like about the item/product
  • My overall opinion regarding the item/product
Here's an example of a recent review I wrote:

I am a night owl. While this does allow me to be super productive at night, it makes sleeping during the day an absolute necessity. The problem though, as I'm sure you'll agree, is that it is so DANG bright outside because of our friend, The Sun. Fortunately, this sleep mask solves that problem for me!

Pros:
* It does a great job of blocking light.
* The contoured design doesn't put any pressure on the eyes, if the mask stays in place
* The material is light and comfortable but thick enough to fully block any light source
* Adjustable strap

Cons:
* The elastic strap kept riding down and onto my ears. It felt like it was cutting into my ears.
 * The nose opening is too low, causing the mask, and thus the eye sockets, to ride up, defeating the purpose of the contoured eye socket.
* There isn't a wing around the nose opening so there is a bit of light leakage that sometimes wakes me up.
 * I would not suggest this for side sleepers as the mask does dislodge

All in all, it's a great mask. There's no pressure on my eyes, which means that I'm not getting extra wrinkles! It's lightweight and comfortable which is SUPER important in the heat of Texas summers. I read the reviews on items before I purchase them and appreciate helpful reviews. If you found this review to be helpful, please give it a thumbs up below. :)

That's pretty much all there is to it! As long as you write quality reviews and submit them in a timely manner, sellers will select you for future reviews. The better your scores, the likelihood increases of you being selected to review more items and higher end products.

Do you read reviews before making purchases? What about writing constructive reviews for items you purchase?
